The core element of this industrial research project is the product development of innovative bipolar plates that are suitable for high-volume production. With these bipolar plates, NTPEM automotive fuel cells be manufactured in a cost efficient way.
These fuel cells can contain more than 400 bipolar plates consisting of two individual sheets each. As a basis for the establishment of a value chain for automotive fuel cells in Saxony, the project focuses on establishing the following fields of competence:
1. Production-oriented construction
2. Efficient development methods
3. Functionalized materials and semi-finished products
4. Suitable production technologies for high-volume production
5. Quality assurance
6. Innovation and knowledge transfer
The new design of the bipolar plates will be converted into a low-cost, process-capable component and tool geometry. In the same way, functionalized semi-finished metal sheets with metal plating and coatings will be examined by means of individual trials with a sample geometry regarding their ability to be formed and jointed without any damages.
After that, their quality-determining chemical, physical and mechanical properties will be characterized for the application in automotive fuel cell systems. Beyond that, inspection methods for quality assurance and process control shall be derived for high-volume production..
